The steps

  1. 1Define your scope and non-negotiables
Write one page: what you need, the deadline, the budget band and the two things you will absolutely not compromise on (e.g. quality, timezone overlap, IP assignment).
  2. 2Build a shortlist of 5 agencies
Use Clutch and GoodFirms filtered by your service and budget. Add 2 referrals from founder friends. Aim for 5 agencies before contacting any of them.
  3. 3Verify real client reviews
Click on Clutch reviews and check the review has a real name, role and company domain. Ignore reviews with generic names or no company.
  4. 4Inspect their own website
If the agencys own site is slow, broken or hasnt been updated since 2022, that tells you how they treat their own brand. Walk away.
  5. 5Request a discovery call and a written proposal
Never hire based on a first email. A 30-minute discovery call and a written scope-of-work with explicit exclusions separates serious agencies from freelancer collectives.
  6. 6Ask for references you can call
Ask for two current clients you can email or call directly. If the agency refuses or filters, its a red flag.
  7. 7Verify IP, NDA, timezone and payment terms
Before signing: IP assignment clause, NDA, confirmed overlap hours, milestone-based payments. Never agree to 100% upfront. Never accept a contract without a termination clause.

Frequently asked

  • How much does a good Indian web dev agency cost?In 2026, good Indian agencies charge $25–$80 per hour depending on role. Anything under $15 for a "senior" engineer should be questioned.
  • Should I pay by milestone or monthly retainer? For fixed-scope projects, milestones. For ongoing product work, monthly retainers. Never hourly without a cap — it incentivises slow work.
